Question:

It has rained, grass is growing, weeds are growing even better; why are we still under a burn ban?

Answer (from Ryan Holzaepfel Coordinator with Chambers County Emergency Management) :

KDBI
Answer:
Our team checks the KBDI (Keetch-Byram Drought Index) on the Forest Service every day.  We really haven't gotten a lot of rain when you consider how dry and how dead the vegetation was BEFORE the rain happened.  Once the grass is dead, it remains dry dead fuel.  What we need is several days of consistent, steady rain to get us out of this.  We just are getting some here and there and it isn't helping.  Unfortunately, I don't see any rain forecast for this week!  I just checked the KBDI and it is rising again.

Question:

So bottom line is Chambers County monitors the Texas Forest Service for alerts and changes in conditions and the Commissioner's Court issues or cancels a ban accordingly.

Answer:

Right
