BOB WHEAT INDUCTED INTO TEXAS NAVY

During a regular meeting of the Chambers County Historical Commission on September 26th, Chair Bob Wheat was surprised to be awarded the rank of Admiral in the Texas Navy by a Proclamation signed by Governor Rick Perry.  The honor was bestowed by Admiral James B. Sterling, III, who is likewise a Texas Navy Admiral and an ex-officio member of the Commission.

Prior to the presentation, the Commission heard committee reports from the various committee chairs and discussed upcoming events for the Commission.  A ghost watch will be conducted on October 30th at the Thomas Jefferson Chambers Home.  This event coincides with the Halloween program that will be conducted at the County Library in Anahuac.

The Commission also discussed the upcoming Christmas Toy Drive that will be held on the first and second Saturdays in December.  The drive will also be held at the Chambers Home and toys that are collected are distributed to needy families in the County.  The Chambers Home will be decorated and refreshments will be served on these two Saturdays.  The public is urged to support this worthwhile project.

The St. Emily United Methodist Church in Old River will be celebrating its 128th Anniversary on October 11th.  The celebration program will begin at 3:00 pm at the church located on FM 565 in Old River.

The Historical Commission meets at 9:00 am on the fourth Saturday of each month in the Historical Museum/Archives Building and the public is welcome to attend

Free Parking in A, B, and C Parking Lots on the 59 side.

The step off of the troop's march to the stadium will start at the George R. Brown Convention Center down Avenidas Avenue.  The step off starts at 1:00 p.m. sharp.  The troops will march down over to Minute Maid Stadium and enter in the Right Field Gate.  I would imagine that you would want to be in the parking lot to see this Historic Event and then follow the troops into the Stadium.

Neighbors in Woodland Acres worry about speeders

From the Baytown Sun

When Christina Cox’s children get off the school bus every evening, the empty driveway in front of their Woodland Acres home is like a slap in the face.

“Rock used to meet them there every day,” said their mother. “It was the cutest thing.”

Rock, the Cox family’s friendly 1-year-old pit bull was hit and killed by a speeding vehicle Saturday. It happened in front of the entire family, some friends and some neighbors in the quiet subdivision just off Farm-to-Market Road 1409.

Cox and some of her neighbors have been worried about people speeding through their neighborhood for some time. Their neighborhood is a part of the city of Old River and Cox wants city officials to do something to try to stop it.

She says the posted 30 mile-per-hour speed limit (which she thinks is a bit too fast for the neighborhood) doesn’t slow down a lot of drivers, who rush past her home at speeds of 40, 50 and even 60 miles-per-hour.

It was one of those speeding vehicles, driven by a young woman, that killed Rock.

“It’s something no child should have to see, to see their pet killed like that,” said neighbor Gerrie Miller, who also witnessed the sad event.

What happened on Saturday traumatized the entire Cox family but Cox is even more upset by the thought that it might have been a child who was hit and killed by that speeding driver, who did not stop to offer assistance or even a word of remorse.

It happened about 4 p.m.

“We had some company over and we were all sitting outside in the front yard talking,” said Cox.

Her four children and two more visiting children were playing with Rock when the young dog apparently noticed a squirrel and ran toward it. Unfortunately he ran in the direction of the road.

“We all heard the car coming,” Cox said. “When they get going fast like that we hear the motors racing. We all yelled at Rock and my 10-year-old son started running out there to try to do something.”

The car, a taupe-colored Toyota Corolla, sped up to the house, hugging the side of the road so tightly it was almost driving with one wheel off the road.

“Rock wasn’t actually in the road but he was close,” said Cox as she pointed out the spot where the dog was hit. “The corner of the car just clipped him and then he was being tossed through the air.”

The impact killed the dog instantly, leaving his broken body some 15 feet from the point of impact and his horrified family in shock.

Cox said as soon as she realized there was nothing she could do for the dog, she immediately ran to her own vehicle and tried to chase down the car that killed her dog. She didn’t find it though and admits that it is probably a good thing. Now that the initial wild-eyed reaction has settled down into a steely determination, Cox still wants to find that driver, just to make sure that driver knows how her actions have torn up the Cox family. She also wants something done to slow down drivers in the area.

To help that along, the Cox family has erected a huge four-foot by eight-foot wooden sign in their front yard that reads “Slow Down Before U Hit A Child.”

Her across-the-street neighbor, Gerrie Miller, followed suit with a sign on her side of the road that reads “Slow Down. The next thing you hit may be a child.”

“People are noticing the signs,” Cox said. “At least they are slowing down long enough to read them.”

She wants more than that, though, and so does Miller.

“I’m tired of it,” said Miller. “I’m afraid a kid is going to get hit. We’ve fought for this for years.”

“We can’t do it alone though,” said Cox. “If it takes speed bumps, then let’s try speed bumps.”

Miller, who has lived in her house since 1992, said that numerous speeding vehicles have ended up in the ditch in front of her house. Losing mailboxes to speeding vehicles is a regular occurrence, she added.

“Every time we turn around we have to replace our mailbox, but that is nothing compared to what happened on Saturday. This has been devastating to her (Cox’s) kids and her husband is really grieving,” Miller said. “Rock was just the most lovable dog.”

The dog was not prone to wander near the road, Cox said.

“He usually stayed on the front porch or he stayed in the shop with my husband whenever he was working out there.”

Her husband, Michael Cox, has taken the dog’s loss very hard.

“He’s not an emotional person but this … well, it is hard to see a grown man cry,” said Cox.

She knows that some people will say that the dog should have been contained in a yard or on a leash, but that is really beside the point now, she said.

“This is not just about my dog and not just about my kids,” she said. “It could have been any child on this street.”

“It shouldn’t take a tragedy to get something done because by then it is too late. We’ve been trying to get something done for a long time. Now it is time for the City Council to do something.”

Cox said she spent six hours on Sunday, the day after Rock’s death, taking photographs of speeding cars passing in front of her home. She plans to share those with area officials and hopes that will help convince them that something must be done.

“I’ve talked to them about putting signs out here that say “Slow: Children At Play,” but they said they wouldn’t do it. They did say if I wanted to buy the signs they would put them up for me.”

“I’ve talked to people about getting street lights out here too, to make it safer at night, but I’ve been told that is too expensive.”

She hopes now that the City Council will take another look at the situation and do something.

“Maybe Rock was just a dog, but to us he was a family member. If his death leads to something happening that will help make it safer out here, then at least that will be something good.”

The Cox family will have another dog someday, she said.

“Not until we fence off the backyard, though,” she added.

New Laws – You have probably heard about new State Laws taking effect today, but here are a few to note:

 1.  Teen Drivers:  Effective TODAY, the laws for teenage drivers are getting tougher.  Drivers younger than 18 are banned from using cell phones while driving (dialing, talking, texting) and total hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction a teen receives is increasing from 14 to 34 before getting a license.

 2.  Driving in a School Zone:  TODAY,  the use of a wireless device within a reduced-speed school zone is prohibited. Cellular phones may be used while the vehicle is stopped in a school zone or with a hands-free device. The law also applies to bus drivers. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $200.  Note: Cities or counties wanting to enforce this law must post a sign at the beginning of each school zone to inform drivers that using a wireless communications device is prohibited and the operator is subject to a fine.   THE SIGNS ARE UP IN SOME AREAS!

 3.  Seat Belts: Effective TODAY, all occupants of a vehicle, no matter their age, front and back seat, must wear seatbelts.
