Bruce Matthews played for the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans. He was selected All-Pro 12 years in a row (a record) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

He is currently one of the offensive line coaches for the Houston Texans. Most importantly, he is an outspoken Christian and will be bringing our message following the time of worship.

He will be at OLD RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow, Monday, May 4, 2009.

This is something every Football fan will want to see!  Whether you play it in High School now, or used to play, or like to sit on the couch and root your team on, this is for You!

Spread the Word!  I know this is short notice, but a phone call will do the trick!

The Men's Monthly Fellowship Supper is at 6:30 p.m. that night and then they will regroup in the the Worship Center to hear Bruce!  If you have never been to the Men's Monthly Fellowship Supper, find out about it at the ORB website

Hurricane Season is upon us!

Old River-Winfree, Chambers County, and Old River Baptist are preparing for the new Hurricane Season.  As we look back on Hurricane Ike, start preparing your family and your house.

Become familiar with Chambers County Website.  It is a wealth of information for our county.  Their website is:  http://co.chambers.tx.us  The Emergency Management  should be added to your favorites to learn about any emergency in our County, State, or Country.  The web page is:  http://co.chambers.tx.us/offices/emermgmt.html

Take responsibility for your home and your family.  In the first three days after a hurricane, don't expect any emergency vehicles, the Sheriff's Department, or supplies to be able to get to you.  Be prepared for the worst case scenario.

Always be prepared for a minimum of three (3) days without electricity.  The devastation of Hurricane Ike left some of us without electricity for 2 weeks and more.  PREPARE!

Thank God it wasn't as hot as it could have been, but remember batteries!  Battery operated fans were really in demand during our recovery time.  Buy early.  Radios, flashlights, candles.  Try those Red Cross Emergency Radios at Best Buy or Wal-Mart.  They are around $45.

Have a place to go for a few days, in case you are without electricity for a while.

If possible, turn the main power off to your house to prevent a surge when the electricity comes back on.

The ORW will be working with J & S Water to insure a generator is readily available to keep the water flowing to us and to keep our drinking water safe from contamination.

Be prepared is the Motto of the Boy and Girl Scouts.  If our children can do it, we can, too.

If you have any suggestions that helped in getting your through Hurricane Ike aftermath, please e-mail us and we will share it with others.

Swine Flue

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:

People cannot get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Most influenza viruses, including the swine flu virus, are not spread by food.

Eating properly handled and cooked pork products is safe.

No food safety issues have been identified, related to the flu.

Preliminary investigations have determined that none of the people infected with the flu had contact with hogs.

The virus is spreading by human-to-human transmission.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands frequently and use alcohol-based sanitizers.

Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Try to stay in good general health.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Mosquito spraying by plane has been delayed due the winds we have all been noticing and the rain, of course.  County sprayers (with which the City of Old River-Winfree signs an interlocal agreement every year) can not spray during the day because of honey bee owners don't want their bees destroyed as bees journey out during the day.  At night they are back in the hive.  So they have to wait for no winds or rain at night to spray.

They are spraying tonight.
