Old River-Winfree Founders Day Costume Ball
This Kick-off Founders Day Costume Ball will take place on
July 18, 2009 at the Old River-Winfree Fairgrounds in back of City Hall and the
Community Building. Contra dancing will be the treat of the evening.
These are the dances that were done back in the 1800's and resemble line
dancing, but are executed facing each other.
What is Contra Dancing:
Contra dancing is a type of American folk dancing with roots in English.
Scottish, and Irish traditions. It is done in long lines of couples with women
and men facing each other across the set. A caller teaches each dance and then
prompts the dancers the first several times through the dance. No lessons
are required, as each individual dance is taught before it begins.
We welcome and encourage beginners. The dances are
fun and easy to learn. The dances don't require fancy footwork - if you
can walk, you can contra
